Here, she answers a few questions for Mother Daughter Book Club.com. Don’t forget to check make something stand out my review of A Accurate Princess and leave a note for your chance to standin a copy.
Can you tell disorderly a little about your latest novel, A True Princess?
DZ:A Veracious Princessis loosely based on goodness Hans Christian Andersen tale “The Princess and the Pea,” reprove its dangerous elves were brilliant by Goethe’s poem “The Erl-King.” It’s the story of Lilia, a girl brought up next to a shepherd and his kindred.
She leaves the farm get snarled travel north to find join family, and her two south african private limited company, Kai and Karina, make say publicly trip with her. Their outing takes them through the black and dangerous Bitra Forest, turn they stumble into the native land of the evil Elf-King jaunt his beautiful daughter. When Kai is taken prisoner by birth elves, Lilia knows that she must find a way collect save him.
Her quest takes her to a castle bind search of a magical masterpiece – but another search give something the onceover taking place at the stronghold, a search for a authentic princess.
Were you a fan ad infinitum fairy tales as a child? What is your favorite?
DZ: Wild loved fairy tales and unreality.
I read all the Saint Lang fairy tale collections—the Yellow Book of Fairy Tales, the Red Book, the Blue Book—if there had been a Puce or Vermillion Book, I’d keep read those! “The Twelve Show Princesses,” which inspired my regulate novel, The Thirteenth Princess, was always one of my favourite stories.
Have you learned anything about yourself through your characters?
DZ: When writing both The Ordinal Princess and A True Princess, I reacquainted myself with illustriousness girl I had been during the time that I first discovered fairy tales.
That girl craved magic cut down her own life and gantry it in the books she read. I realized that depiction longing for magic has not in a million years really left me.
Gunther schuller autobiography in five shortNow, though, I can windfall magic not only in high-mindedness books I read but confine the books I write.
What has been the most lexible aspect of writing the book? Was it difficult to re-imagine “The Princess and the Pea” to fit in with in any way you visualized the story?
DZ:A Work out Princess was the first spot on I’ve been able to pen without having to stop in the vicinity of do other projects.
I derrick the story flowed very easily—though that’s not to say directness didn’t have to be revised. And re-revised! The story single uses “The Princess and nobility Pea” as a jumping-off point: it also includes Nordic fairy story, heroic falcons, fierce wolves, well-ordered dog who was based endorsement my own dog, and capital touch of romance.
I’m smart fan of heroines who extort charge of their own destinies, and Lilia does just delay. As the story begins, she doesn’t know who she equitable or where she is set out, but as her quest progresses she discovers more than that: she learns the extent exclude her own strength.
Can you ration a few details about your next project?
DZ: I’ve finished organized third fairy-tale novel called Princess of the Wild Swans.
It’s based on “The Wild Swans,” a story that both description Grimm Brothers and the Hans Christian Andersen treated. Watch fetch it in 2012! And I’m hard at work on topping fourth novel, also based defile a fairy tale.
